Appropriate and logical learning pathways

Together, we develop the talent of each student. To us, this includes ensuring that every student can pursue an appropriate and logical learning path. We call this flexibilization. Flexibilization might be the biggest challenge for Alfa College: transforming into a system that allows students to learn at their own pace or according to their interests, and start their studies at a time of their choosing. See the animation about the goal of flexibilization.

We distinguish three types of flexibilization:

  1. Own pace: students can speed up or slow down;
  2. Off the beaten path: students can choose learning units from another program to broaden or deepen their knowledge;
  3. My diploma: students have the choice in the format, location, and method of completing a learning unit.

Starting this school year (2024-2025), 95% of first-year students can learn through at least one of the three flexibilization types. Additionally, 87% of programs offer first-year students the opportunity to enroll at least twice a year. The "off the beaten path" variant is still uncommon because flexibilization is often addressed at the team level, which complicates the interchangeability of learning units.

Good Student Guidance Essential

Good student guidance is an essential prerequisite for offering students appropriate and logical learning paths. Therefore, we have included the implementation of the career orientation policy (LOB) as a project within the program for appropriate and logical learning paths (PLL).

Good Team Support Essential

Another prerequisite is supporting teams in developing appropriate and logical learning paths. We have strengthened the PLL program organization by including educational managers with a flexibilization portfolio at each location. We have also developed a CurriculumScan. This tool provides educational teams with insight into their curriculum and their progress with the flexibilization theme. This allows them to develop and execute a more targeted action plan. We share great examples with each other so teams can learn from one another.

Finally, it is important that our systems and processes support the flexibilization challenge. In 2024, we have adjusted our systems and processes as much as possible to support the selection of learning units and the necessary scheduling adjustments.
